Why We Champion World Soil Day

Every year on December 5th, the world takes a moment to look down. It’s World Soil Day, a United Nations observance dedicated to the thin layer of earth that sustains all life on our planet.

This year’s theme, "Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities," challenges everyone (not just farmers, but city planners, builders, and tech manufacturers like us) to rethink how our urban environments interact with the ground beneath them. Here is how we support the initiative every day.

We See Soil as a Renewable Energy

One of our flagship technologies, Geothermal Hydronic Heat Pumps, relies entirely on the stable energy stored within the earth. Instead of burning fossil fuels that contribute to soil degradation, geothermal systems treat the ground as a battery.

  • By championing this technology, we’re encouraging a shift away from extractive, polluting energy sources toward a model that works in harmony with the land.
  • By protecting the climate we protect the soil’s ability to sequester carbon and filter water - keeping our cities resilient.

Healthy Cities Need Healthy Buildings

The UN’s 2025 theme focuses on the fact that urban soil is often sealed under concrete and asphalt, preventing it from absorbing rainwater and regulating temperature. This leads to flooding and "urban heat islands."

We see buildings as living parts of the urban ecosystem, which means it’s all about doing more with less space and less energy. As proud members of the Green Building Council of Australia and the Australian Passive House Association, we advocate for construction standards that are better for the environment.

Our Heat Recovery Ventilation systems and energy-efficient electric hot water units are designed to make buildings smarter and less wasteful.

Growing Knowledge at the Energy Campus

Our Energy Campus is a hub where we train installers, architects, and designers on the advances and efficiencies of green technology. We believe that if we can educate the industry on how to install and maintain sustainable systems, the ripple effect will be massive. We are planting the seeds of knowledge that will grow into a greener construction industry for Australia.

Because sustainability isn't just about hardware; it’s about heart-ware. It’s about the people and the knowledge driving change. At STIEBEL ELTRON, we don’t just make things, we teach people how to use them.

Our Promise

For over 100 years, we’ve been innovating to improve home comfort. But comfort inside cannot come at the cost of the world outside. From our strict Code of Conduct to our detailed Sustainability Strategies, we are 100% committed to reducing our footprint.

So, this World Soil Day, we are celebrating the ground we walk on. Whether it’s through a geothermal heat pump drawing warmth from the backyard or a ventilation system keeping indoor air fresh, we are proud to play our part in building Healthy Cities for a sustainable future.
