Solar PV Ready Heat Pumps
The all-electric home of the future is available today thanks to solutions from STIEBEL ELTRON. Combining products from the various ranges offered, including hot water, heating, ventilation and cooling, will pave the way to energy efficiency with no need to connect to other forms of fossil fuels. When combined and optimised with solar PV, this results in minimal to non-existent bills.

Hot water, heating, ventilation, cooling – all advanced building services can be operated using renewables. For even greater self-sufficiency, STIEBEL ELTRON heat pumps can be networked with solar PV and energy management tools to create smart systems. Heating and self-generated electricity are perfectly matched; on-site consumption of solar power is optimised.
Other appliances in the home can also be controlled and thus operated at reasonable cost using solar power generated on site. This lowers household energy bills and CO2 emissions, whilst boosting self-sufficiency and sustainability.
The Goal of the Energy Transition is Independence From Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels are in decline on the electricity market – too harmful to the climate and becoming ever more scarce. Nowadays, alternative energies using the sun, wind and water are being used to generate green power.
A perfect match:
Solar PV and the WWK heat pump
SG Ready Implementation
SG Ready implementation of connecting the STIEBEL ELTRON WWK hot water heat pump allows for a higher water temperature and more “free“ hot water. A signal wire is connected from the solar PV inverter* to the WWK activating a higher secondary water temperature set point.
- Two-way meter
- Inverter
Full EMS Implementation
A full Energy Management System implementation provides the best holistic solution for connecting the STIEBEL ELTRON WWK hot water heat pump to a solar PV system. The EMS will activate the WWK to heat water at the best possible time to reduce consumption from the grid.

- EMS
- Two-way meter
- Wireless socket
- Internet router
- Separate power supply for anode
The complete package:
Solar PV and hydronic heat pumps
SG Ready Implementation
Connecting a STIEBEL ELTRON hydronic heat pump to an inverter with a signal wire is very similar to the SG Ready configuration above. This can also be done with geothermal hydronic heat pumps. A signal wire is attached to the heat pump manager which triggers the secondary set point for an increase in hot water and heating temperatures. The signal wire action is configured and can be monitored remotely with the ISG internet gateway device.
- Two-way meter
- Inverter
- ISG Internet Service Gateway
- Internet router
Full EMS Implementation
The complete EMS solution is integrating solar PV with your STIEBEL ELTRON hydronic heat pump. This solution can provide efficient hot water, heating and cooling for a dwelling. The WPM heat pump manager can be programmed to optimise heat pump operation with solar PV generation. The addition of an ISG internet service gateway allows the heat pump to be monitored and controlled over an internet connection.

Connecting a Hot Water Heat Pump
to a Energy Management System
An Energy Management System (EMS) is a technology platform comprised of hardware components controlled by software with the goal of monitoring and optimising energy usage in a household.
How Are Appliances Managed By The EMS?
The EMS combines hardware and software to predict solar PV generation and allocate energy appropriately to appliance consumption. The EMS interface will consider device operation based on priority, such as the hot water heat pump, and delay the running of other devices, such as the washing machine, to maximise self-consumption of generated energy. Over time, the EMS software can understand usage patterns to improve the allocation of solar PV generation further. Any excess energy can be utilised by a battery or electric vehicle, minimising export to the grid.
What Effect Does This Have On Hot Water Running Costs?
With a compatible and energy-efficient water heater (STIEBEL ELTRON WWK hot water heat pump) and the use of an EMS solution, minimising running costs to the point of generating “free” hot water becomes an achievable reality.
